Bettis Paces LC Men’s Golf Team with 3rd Place Finish at Fall Preview at Swan Lake Resort Golf Club
Plymouth, IN – The men’s golf team teed it up at Swan Lake Resort Golf Club in Plymouth, IN this past weekend for the NJCAA Fall Preview tournament. The tournament saw 9 teams compete for what was scheduled for a 54-hole tournament, 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday. However, frigid morning temperatures and frost on the golf course pushed Saturday’s 9:00am shotgun start back to 10:45am which eliminated the second 18-holes that were scheduled to be played later that day. Lincoln finished with a team score of 681 (345/336) which placed them 8th overall. Lincoln’s individual scores, led by a 3rd place finish by Freshman Hunter Bettis (Bluffs, IL), were as follows:
Hunter Bettis 74-76 – 150
Hunter Leach (Glasford, IL) 81-90 – 171
Josh Matthews (Delavan, IL) 93-84 – 177
Peter Greening (Pittsfield, IL) 101-86 – 187
Cody Curry (Mason City, IL) 100-90 – 190
Nik Jackson (Springfield, IL) 97-98 – 195
Head men’s golf coach Jeff Nelson said, “The 2016 NJCAA National Golf Tournament will be played at this same course in May. We wanted to give our guys a chance to play it should our team or individuals advance to the National Tournament. With the exception of Bettis, the guys didn’t play near their capabilities, but at the very least, the guys were able to make a few notes on each of the holes in case they get a chance to play it again in the Spring. Bettis had a very good chance to win the event, but had a couple of hiccups including his final hole of the tournament that sent him back in to 3rd place. He hit 2 balls out of bounds on his final hole and he was a little bitter at the end of his round, but his goal was to get a top-5 finish so all-in-all it was a very good tournament for him. He had 10 birdies on the weekend, so he’s not afraid to attack the pins.”
The men’s golf team’s final tournament will be this weekend in the Bearcat Open hosted by McKendree University at The Hills Golf Club in Lebanon, IL. They will tee it up at 10:00am. McKendree features Lincoln College graduate and National Qualifier Tanner Cicci on their roster.

LC Men’s Golf Team Led by Bettis’ T8 at Big Blue Classic
Decatur, IL – The men’s golf team competed in the Big Blue Classic hosted by Millikin University this past weekend at Hickory Point Golf Course in Decatur, IL. Lincoln freshman Hunter Bettis finished tied for 8th place with a 2-day score of 76-70/146. Bettis moved up 12 spots with his second day score of even par 70. The conditions were blustery with sustained winds of 12-15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph but the course was in excellent condition. Head coach Jeff Nelson commented, “I thought the second day was a bit tougher than the first, but four of our guys improved their scores, which is encouraging. Bettis continues to be our solid #1 this year but we need a couple of our other players to lower their scores on a more consistent basis.”
The event saw mostly NCAA Division III schools with the exception of Lincoln College and Parkland College. Parkland College won the event and also had the medalist for the event.
